Progress Update On Repair Works At Nicoll Highway

Several traffic improvements will be implemented progressively to improve the traffic flow which has been diverted to Kallang Road and other alternative routes since the Nicoll Highway incident.

Traffic Improvements

Improvements at junction of Kallang Road and Crawford Street

To accommodate the increase in city-bound traffic during the morning peak period, improvements have been made at the junction of Kallang Road and Crawford Street since 24 April 2004.

The centre-divider along Kallang Road has been shifted, increasing the number of city-bound lanes from four to five. There are now two exclusive right-turning lanes, two straight-travelling lanes and one exclusive left-turning lane. The exclusive left-turning lane is to facilitate traffic turning from Kallang Road into Crawford Street. Before the improvement works, there were two right-turning lanes, one straight-travelling lane and one shared straight and left-turning lane.

Arising from this change, the number of lanes on Kallang Road in the direction of Sims Avenue has been reduced from four lanes to three lanes near the said junction. This will not reduce the road capacity, as there are three straight-travelling lanes before the junction.

The increase in road capacity and provision of dedicated turning lanes have improved traffic flow at the junction and eased congestion in the morning peak period.

Traffic scheme along Geylang Lorong 1

To facilitate motorists leaving the city during the evening peak period, traffic improvements along Geylang Lorong 1 will also be implemented on 27 April 2004.

The bus lane along Geylang Lorong 1, in the direction of Upper Boon Keng Road, will be removed. This will be converted into a traffic lane in the direction of Mountbatten Road, thereby increasing the road capacity for Geylang Lorong 1 from three lanes to four lanes. The four lanes will comprise two exclusive right-turning lanes and two straight-travelling lanes.

At present, there is one exclusive right-turning lane, one shared right-turning lane, one straight-travelling lane and a bus lane in the direction of Upper Boon Keng Road.

The traffic signals will also be finetuned to provide a green wave for motorists turning right from Kallang Road to Geylang Lorong 1, and straight into Mountbatten Road.

Maps are attached for reference.

Location Maps

Opening of section of Nicoll Highway

A section of Nicoll Highway between Mountbatten Road and Stadium Road has been opened to traffic since 2.00pm on 25 April 2004 to improve access into and out of the Stadium area.

Re-opening of Crawford Underpass

LTA will open the Crawford Underpass to traffic after works on Merdeka Bridge are completed, and the section of Republic Avenue is no longer required as a dedicated access for recovery operations.

Continuous Monitoring of Traffic Conditions

LTA has been closely monitoring traffic conditions in the area around Nicoll Highway and the alternative routes, such as Kallang Road and the East Coast Parkway (ECP), through our traffic surveillance cameras.

Improvements have been made to the phasing of traffic signals and traffic schemes to facilitate traffic flow in the area around Nicoll Highway and the alternative routes. At the key junctions, more green time has been provided for city-bound traffic during morning peak hours and vice versa during evening peak hours to increase traffic throughput.

Motorists can keep themselves updated by tuning in to Traffic Watch. If they are on the expressways heading towards the city, they can obtain updates from messages posted on the Expressway Monitoring and Advisory System (EMAS) signboards.
