Kamil Haque at the 2004 Athens Games. Haque is the son of one of Singapore's 50 Greatest Athletes, Anwarul Haque.

The crux of the Olympian account occurred in the Archive's Section of the Stadium complex... I got my father to pose next to a picture of Tokyo Games poster. For me, this was truly a touching moment. Seeing my father, who has always been a pretty straight laced man, clearly experiencing an emotional moment was rare as it was heartfelt.

Estimated bid cost: $5.1 billion

Bid features: Called the Olympic X Plan, nearly all venues are located along two routes that form the letter "X" across the city, with the Olympic and Paralympic Village at the centre.

Proposed venues, all within a 32km radius, include the Yankee and Giants Stadiums and Flushing Meadows.

Strengths: Leading international profile and multi-cultural sports-loving population.

65 per cent of planned venues already exist.

Glowing marks for finances, security and transportation.

Praised for long-term legacy of bid.

Weaknesses: Bid had been in trouble after funding rejected for earlier proposed stadium. But the city has announced new stadium deal with NY Mets to keep bid alive. The stadium will be built in Queens.

Security concerns following 9/11 still linger.
