SINGAPORE : Singapore's Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has established a S$20 million fund to deepen its engineering expertise.
The Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Fund, named after the late philanthropist, was made possible by a S$10 million gift from the Tan Chin Tuan Foundation. This donation was matched dollar-for-dollar by the government.
Part of the money will go towards the Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Professorship. Its first recipient is Professor Ng Wun Jern, the executive director of the Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute at NTU.
He is expected to lead the university in areas of multi-disciplinary, integrative engineering research. The appointment will be on a year-to-year basis and is renewable up to three years.
The Fund will also be used to foster research collaborations in engineering. This will be done through the inaugural Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Forum to be held later this year and the Tan Chin Tuan Exchange Fellowship in Engineering.
The Forum will provide the university with a platform to network with its China-based alumni and will be a source of continuing education for them on topics relevant to the country's development.
Meanwhile, the Tan Chin Tuan Exchange Fellowship in Engineering will continue to facilitate the exchange of faculty and researchers between NTU and foreign partner institutions. - CNA/ms
