SINGAPORE : The suspicious behaviour of a taxi passenger at the Causeway caught the attention of sharp-eyed immigration officers on Tuesday afternoon.
They searched the man, who had been behaving uneasily and avoiding eye contact with officers, and found a packet of contraband drugs tucked under the belt of his trousers.
According to a statement from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority, the green substance in the cellophane-wrapped packet is believed to contain 137.5 grammes of cannabis.
Preliminary investigations showed that the 49-year-old Singaporean man had bought the drugs from a man called "Suhaimi" in a market in Johor Bahru for 900 ringgit.
The man, who was travelling in a Malaysian-registered taxi headed into Singapore, claimed the drug was intended for his personal consumption.
The case has been referred to the Central Narcotics Bureau for investigations.
For illegal importation of cannabis, the man could be jailed between five years and life imprisonment, and be given between five and 15 strokes of the cane. - CNA/ms
