Dr Tan was a Member of Parliament for 26 years, serving as MP for Ayer Rajah. From 1987-1996 he was a member of the Central Executive Committee of the People's Action Party, resigning from the ruling party in May 2011. Dr Tan was the first Chairman of the government Feedback Unit and was also appointed Co-ordinating Chairman of all Government Parliamentary Committees.

Mr Tan Jee Say was regional managing director of John Govett Asia and its successor company AIB Govett Asia from 1997 to 2001. He served in the administrative service for 11 years, spending most of his time in the Trade and Industry Ministry before going into the private sector where he worked mainly in the finance sector. He stood in the 2011 General Election as a candidate with the opposition SDP.
Mr Tan is married with four children.

Dr Tony Tan retired from politics in 2006 after serving as Deputy Prime Minister, Defence Minister and Co-ordinating Minister for Security and Defence. He served under then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong who requested Dr Tan's return to government after his 1991 departure from the Cabinet where he'd held the posts of Education, Health and Trade & Industry Minister.
While in the private sector, Dr Tan was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Overseas-Chinese Banking Corporation. Until July 2011, Dr Tan was Executive Director and Deputy Chairman of the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC) and Chairman of Singapore Press Holdings Limited (SPH).
Dr Tan is married with four children.
