A free democratic society permit free speech and this include on line comments. It is up to server master to moderate the content. If government start to control media content, could we be sure that they will do it fairly and continue to allow the free flow of comments ?

Why attack the PAP when the topic here is about what PM Lee thinks about SOME of the Western media? He's not referring to all and I do agree that freedom of speech among some online media in the Western democracy lacks responsibility. They are doing profit-driven journalism with the lowest common denominator. Sex, sleaze and sensationalism. If you call that journalism, Our sex workers should be known as social workers. cheers.

"I think people are wise enough not to shoot off their mouths, depending on the platform."

No that's not true, in our imperfect world, not everyone is wise. Just look at local forums and maybe blogs and what the mods have on their hands. I still see unwise statements being written.

But having said that, it is wrong to generalise that new media is the wild west.

That's why PM Lee said that SOME of it are Wild West. I have to agree with him.

It'll be interesting to see how new forms of media/communication is tapped by both sides in our upcoming elections.

I strongly agree with PM Lee. :-)

Giving constructive comments or ideas in the hope of bringing a better life for everyone in the nation, I believe are encouraged.

Unconstructtive or opposed for the sake of opposing - serve no interest. Running a nation is no laughing matter as it affect each and everyone of us. We are a small nation, no natural resources - any missteps will have undire consequences. In such a bad time, all the more - the government, the people, the nation shall locked arms and work in unison to tide through the storm and emerge stronger.

Why are we, as singaporean, stating anything not conventional to singapore, "west?"
That is absurb. Staying abroad for more than 7 years, I dare say the western world aren't as liberated as most in singapore would thought it is.
I believe the new media is a new channel for people with grievances suffocation to air their differences.
We cannot always agree with the disagree, but we do not have to ban the disagree simply because they do not agree with us.
Another_Netizen | 2009-03-01 19:39:03
I don't see how people can disagree. Look at the problems that exist in cyberspace.

Cyber-bullying is a real problem. Youths use blogs and other platforms to post hurtful comments about their peers. And some adults who should know better engage in this too.

Online blogs and forums are full of slanderous comments from netizens.

And any administrator from any popular online forum will tell you they have quite a lot on their hands trying to contain 'flaming' among members.

So those who disagree, who are you kidding?

Whatever the bugger say I agree. Western media are cowboy media.

People under bondage and unable to express. What a pity if they are going to shut their mouth. Sweet medicine don't improve your health either the state of the country but bitter medicine improve health and the country. - think.

One of the natures of new media is that it gives everyone a voice, and a platform to air their views. This inherently brings opportunities for people to share intelligent and insightful comments, but also for others to post negative or even frivolous remarks. In this regard, PM Lee is correct in pointing out the latter aspect of new media. The counterbalance to this is that such people don't make up the majority of blogosphere or the 'netizenship,' and people who are seriously trying to get a fruitful and constructive dialogue going online will eventually identify and disregard those who abuse the system. I suppose Singapore is still an emerging culture when it comes to online citizenry, but it is definitely growing, and commonly recognized blogging etiquette will soon take traction.

Our politicians are juvenile compared with politicians in other parts of the world. They can't take criticism and are afraid that the people are too stupid to tell right from wrong. If the opposition says something that's wrong, just state the facts and let the people make up their minds. The PAP just can't understand how to treat the people like adults, that's why they have to sue because they don't trust the people to differentiate fact from fiction. Grow up PAP.

I wonder how 'wild' can it go...!

The assumption that only "scholars" and the elite can tell the difference between sensible and nonsensical comments and opinions is absolutely flawed, patronising and downright offensive. Anybody who holds such an assumption obviously has a dim view of the country's education system. So much for "thinking schools". The same people also have no faith at all in the quality of parenting in Singapore. You may be able to control discourse, debate and the articulation of thoughts, but you cannot have any control over what people might or might not think. You can try and influence it, but you can never control it. You would have to have a streak of matyrdom in you or be utterly stupid to express certain views openly in Singapore. The eagle will descend on you from a great height and poo on you.
