Two new MRT lines and 100 new stations are being added to improve Singapore's public transport system

Nice. But I don't want to wait a decade, could the lines and stations start operating sooner?
My worry is cost. I hope the fares will not go up too much in response to the construction.
I want the trains and buses to run in synch so journeys will be seamless with little or no need to change buses to get from point to point.

Hold your breath; these 'sudden' developments over the past weeks on transport issues highlight the observation I have made; that the new crop of civil servants are slow to anticipate. They obviously lack ground experience.

Cleanliness, discipline, work culture, foreign labour content etc are issues that are short in attention. Transport issues are now in. Lets sit back and look at the national issues together.

Not are issues need to be cost recoveries basis. Some add quality to life. Some add pride to be a citizen in this country. Some just copy cats of other countries' wastefulness.

Re-invent Singapore .... Stay in touch with the people first; physical touch not taste or smell only.

It is good to make life more convenient for the general majority but that also means we have to compromise on space and greenery as well as put up with the increase in noise level, pollution, congestion and even level of rubbish collection. Like living in HK - the lack of space and the perpetual crowd - I could hardly breathe. Must we head in that direction? If so, can't wait to get out of this country!

I applaud the efforts by the government to increase the mrt lines and available stations. However, they should not forget about existing problems like frequency and reliability. These are niggering day to day problems that commuters encounter and should be tackled immediately while they tackle the big picture in a longer time frame. (2020)

i think price is an important that should be taken into consideration during the construction.
Personally, I think the switch to a different "technology" used by SBS-Transit in the North-South Line is a failure. They claimed to have use a better technology, which is able to cut down man-labour in the operation. But the result is increased cost to the end-users.
So what is the thing to be proud of? Is SBS-Transit proud of being able to reduce employment chance (since lesser jobs) at the expense of higher operating cost???

And now SMRT have extra income of renting out shop spaces (starting in Choa Chu Kang). Does that bring any benefits to the commuters like lowering the ticket price? The price is always going up but not down.

As a Singaporean, I am always proud of our speedy development, but at a high price.

Any good news alway follows by addition cost. It is necessary for a small city. But again, looking at the fast grow of foreigners in Singapore, we defintely need to expand the infrastructure.

And as a citizen, we just have to adjust our life and budget our expenditure. Just stay indoor or take multiple jobs to meet higher expectation.

Good Luck!

The idea of putting 100 more stations is Singapore is great but this will not dampen the desire of many to get their own cars.

As much as I welcome and "applaud" the entire new Transportation overhaul/movement, it seems "too little too late". This should have been done at least 5 years ago.

I waited for the Circle Line for so long, till I got my driving license and have been driving to work in the west from my home in the east. Daily trips take only about half hour or less if there is no serious jam. It really save a lot of time for me, I can stay later at work or if I plan to go home early, I can reach home sooner too.

But I still take public transport to town like Orchard etc in the weekend because I know of the traffic. Hope the improvements are really clear and evident especially in the city.

Cheers

This announcement is purely to create future activities for the singapore economy as a whole and to soothe the worries and fear of investor in our country due to the poor global economy sentiment in year to come. Let be patience and wait for the arrival of this project. Hope that the profit of the operator would not add cost to travelling of commuters.

Every real improvement to the transport system must not keep profiteering for the big shareholders of the operators, cost must be low as long the system is safe, clean and reliable and on time and no freebies needed. More Subsidies by government should be considered as this for the real public of singapore.

They should made the train automated and reduce waiting time.
I find the train queues way overcrowded. I have to wait for 3 trains before I can get in.
Goon Ah San | 2008-01-28 12:37:52
What an ABSOLUTELY CRAZY IDEA. Get ready for higher fares, overcrowding and a gradually fast sinking island.

This country is just way too overcrowded with people and infrastructure.

i hope with the upcoming new line, it will not affect greeneries situated in the catchment area... already with the construction along PIE at bukit timah is an eyesore as plant species and native trees have to be removed just to pave way for the line...

How about North-East line? There is no link from there. Those from the North still have to travel to South then to East. If there is a North-East line, at least those staying at the North can travel to work at Changi or Pasir Ris.
edmund chan | 2008-01-28 09:58:49
I have been waiting for 10 years for the line to run along Upper Bukit Timah Road. As the density in this area increases, I hope the govt will expedite their plans to develop the line along this route
Teresa | 2008-01-28 09:01:29
I am greatly agreeable with the suggestion of linking Yishun to Pungool & even further to Tampines or Pasir Ris since building of MRT in the first place is meant to improve the transportation, congestion and it would be practical for people who need to travel conveniently & in the shortest of time thus saving travelling cost and time without going to town would be really great.

It's a profitable idea, but to make the lives of everyone in Singapore better, should the government consider operating the public transport 24-hours a day? It would be reasonable even if the frequencies of trains are lesser during the super non-peak period.
