Lower road tax, higher ERP rates, more ERP gantries and road improvements. These are the improvements to Singapore's transport landscape for road users.

Making cars more affordable but costlier to use, while developing expressways isn't the answer. It simply spreads the congestion around.
While taxi companies are lowering rental fees, commuters will still bear higher fares and ERP rates. I will take buses or trains.
This bodes well for the future, as more may cycle and walk, making us healthier and reducing carbon emissions.

I'm sick of long waiting times for buses and congestion in the MRT/bus during peak hours. Worse, taxi rides are getting more and more expensive despite being PUBLIC transport, not semi-private transport. Understandably, many friends of mine chose cars over public transport. They just cannot tolerate being late for work despite leaving home early because the bus/train was late/congested/irregular arrivals etc..

More might chose to cycle but hey, cyclists are banned on pathways and it's dangerous to cycle on the roads. So maybe someone from the transport ministry can enlighten us on exactly how cyclists can become "Beijing-style" (ie: cycle everywhere without restrictions)? No point promoting a sporting culture/healthier lifestyle when such a beneficial form of exercise is not promoted.

I agree with what Humpty said. Having ERP is one thing. But when there isn't a viable alternative, it will lead to more congestion and frustration! E.g. ERP from Beach Road to Bedok; alternate is Beach Road to Geylang to Bedok via New Upper Changi Road. The alternate, if we choose to take it to avoid the ERP gantry near Beach Road, will set us back by at least half an hour due to roadworks etc. So what should we do? People will be forced to take ERP (at least the lanes are wider) and it's an expressway. This will lead to more jam and eventually LTA will raise the ERP price again. This is not fair because there really isn't a viable alternative.

I hope the Transport Minister can seriously read the comments posted by Humpty on 05.02.2008 to find out what has gone wrong in the past few years and take immediate remedial action

We should support this with programmes such as flexi-work arrangements, external transport consultants and better real-time traffic info solutions.

The design of Singapore road has problem. Did anyone of you notice that most of the expressway exit is always in front of an entrant. That means that slow car going to the expressway often get cross with fast car trying to do an exit. This would create traffic slow down at all the entrant and at the same time slow down the traffice in the expressway.

Our expressway design is also very prone to accidents, as slow and fast car have to cross their path. ERP will not solve the road design issue. It is merely an excuse to replace the decade old money generating mechanism, the COE.

Can't anybody see what is happening? Whether it is car ownership, ERP, MRT, bus or taxi fares the solution (for no solution) is always to increase the cost.

widen all the roads in singapore. including estate roads and main roads leading to expressways, the govt should bear the full cost of it to really solve the problem since they intent to set up too many ERP gantries and raising the ERP fare..

pedestrian waiting for green man to cross the road should be longer, this would allow the cars to have the green light to go ahead without stopping so often which leads to pile up of congestions.

remember, the issue now is congestion and slow traffic. setting up too many gantries will not and never solve the congestion problem. if its gonna work, prepare to lose 1/2 of singapore's vehicle population.

What's the objective of the transportation management system in Singapore? To maintain free flowing roads in Singapore. How to do it? Encourage more people to use public transport. Who are they? Two groups, those who use bus/MRT and those use taxi. How to encourage? Keep cost relatively cheaper than car ownership, especially taxi as these are the group that is most likely to want to buy a car if financially possible. How to keep cost low for taxi? Keep the cost of taking taxi compare to owning car a least 2 times cheaper, as you must factor in the convenient of car ownership. Simple but can be effective

To curb the growing population of cars, raising ERP and introducing more gantries is not the long term solution. The authorities should seriously look into ways to improve the public transport system mainly our buses & trains. My friends choose to own cars because they are sick of the long waiting time & packed buses and trains. Try to visualise the frustrations when one has waited 30 mins for the buses only to realise that the bus is packed to the extent that the bus driver does not allow boarding anymore. Perhaps the standard waiting time of 15mins should be abolished. Instead, do a study of the demand and supply of different buses to determine the appropriate waiting time for each bus number. Example: I board bus 124 from Orchard at least twice weekly at about 2215. By the time the bus leaved Chinatown at about 2255, it is always packed to the bus entrance. If this is the evening rush hour, I can better stomach this. But why are we having such a packed bus even at 11pm? It makes no sense at all. I would strongly urge the authorities to look into this issue.

after so many negative comments, no reaction from the govt or LTA. so what if rebate for next road tax is at 10%, 15% or 20% etc. thereafter, they will pinch us from somewhere else to recover the whatever rebate they give out earlier. the best is they will recover the rebate by other means to include those who do not drive or even own a car..... no bad huh?
allen chang | 2008-02-07 14:03:34
Simply reduce the number of COE drastically(Buyer will not be happy) and improve public transport to premium standard to meet long term substanable objective and protect the environment.
maddy | 2008-02-07 12:28:15
LTA can make this oppourtunity or demand to spur the economy by improving the Infrastructure and cars more offordable, by building more bridges, car parks. They can show innovation to resolve congestion instead of making things costly.
Jon | 2008-02-07 08:44:01
If the plan is to make most people to take public transport, then it has to be ensure that the public transport system has to be ready to handle that many people. This should be done before increasing the ERPs.

Now the problem is shifted to the public transport sector. And fares are forever increasing. It's seems like crowding all the chickens in a farm into the slaughter house.

We are not decision maker, what is the point of giving feedback after the decision already made. Will it help us to solve the $$$ problem? it is true ERP does not solve the congestion, the decision maker aware about it and yet they are implementing this failure system. I totally understand that our hard earn money is not belongs to us. If we die due to hunger and if we cant provide food for our children, it is our problem. We got no choice, living standard high and our money is not belongs to us, only advise given is we have to mentally prepare ,but how to prepare mentally when our money not within our control? 3 quater of salary already pay to all the expenses and what we can do is only sit down and look at the ceiling and no life, thats all.
Rita | 2008-02-06 09:15:46
If you want to control no of cars, then cars and car related cost (COE, road tax) should be made more expensive. By increasing ERP, you affect those who take cabs too and the earnings of cab drivers.
