Steven Chia

You see him at work, but what does he get up to after that? It seems he just can't sit still and
with a little bundle of joy, he's actually got himself 2 full time jobs!

Find out 10 things you may not know about Steven.

Five days a week you're up in the wee hours of the morning. So when it comes to the weekend, what's the first thing you do?
Breakfast! I miss heading out to the local coffeeshop to get my fix of kopi-o (thick black coffee) and noodles. It's nice to be awake with the rest of the world and to just spend time reading the papers and playing with my kid.

Outside of work, what other things keep you busy?
Well, I'm the kind of guy that just can't sit still. So I tend to get involved in many things.

For instance, I'm currently involved with an ongoing project called Citibank-YMCA Youth for Causes. Basically, ideas for projects to raise money for charities are submitted. Groups are then shortlisted based on the feasibility of the idea and given seed money to get it going. The final amount raised then goes directly to the charity they are supporting.

Another project called *scape is all about creating a new space for youth to do their own stuff. Best of all, this site is located right smack in the heart of the city on Orchard road. It will be an avenue for youth to run programmes, events, activities and just about anything they can think of.

Let's talk about parenting. You're a first time father, what's that like?
You know...it's actually pretty great. I mean you hear all these stories of how you don't have a life anymore...well, it's not true, (at least not entirely). Sure, there is this new little person who follows you around wherever you go, but that's what makes it special.

We still go out quite a bit and we take little Lucy along with us. In fact, she loves it. She's happiest when we are out.

But overall, the parenting experience is really special. It's not an easy task and it does require lots of effort from both the husband and wife, but the reward is immeasurable. One smile from their little faces and you forget all about the lack of sleep from the previous night.

If you were not a broadcast journalist, what do you think you would have been?
It's hard to say and I’ve never really thought about it. Although the funny thing is I have thought about retirement. When that happens, I want to be able to "choose" the work I want to do. So I want to work for the joy of it and not because I have to. With that in mind, I think I wouldn’t mind teaching or cooking.

Teaching or cooking? Tell us more.
Well, I think teaching is great because it’s an interactive thing. So you learn while they learn. At least, that’s how I think it should be. It isn’t meant to be a one way street of just one person imparting knowledge. It’s a shared experience.

As for cooking, well, I find it somewhat therapeutic. There is so much experimentation going on there. So you try something and if no one likes it, well, you just try again…and let’s be honest, who doesn’t like eating?

Given a choice of a holiday in the mountains or at the beach, which would you pick?
The beach! Give me a beach with clear blue waters and soft white sand and I will have found my utopia.
