Belief is the theme for Singapore's first visual arts biennale.
Led by internationally renowned curator Fumio Nanjo, the exhibition will feature a diverse selection of international contemporary art practices, including artists from Singapore and its neighbouring regions.
Singapore Biennale 2006 sets out to create a reflection; examining the question of belief in relation to the system of art itself.
The event showcases artists from across the Asia Pacific, Africa, Middle East, Europe, Latin and North America.
Prime Time Morning interviewed Lee Suan Hiang, Chairman for the Singapore Biennale 2006 Steering Committee, Eugene Tan and Ho Tzu Nye curator and artist for ‘Belief’ for more of what you can expect.
Lee Suan Hiang described the birth of the Biennale, "The idea of a Biennale has been floated many times over the years. About three years ago, we decided that we should do something seriously. That was how we started to work on a visual arts event that will bring Singapore’s arts to a new level. We felt that to make Singapore a distinctive global city for the arts, we need to stress the richness of diversity and we need to that in the different art forms. In the performing arts, we have been very successful in the Singapore Arts Festival. For the visual arts, we wanted to create two biennial events. The first one was Singapore Arts by Singapore artists, which we called Singapore Arts Show and that was launched last year. The second one is the Singapore Biennale which will really put Singapore on the world map. It will help Singapore join the international communities of biennales."
A team of four curators worked for over a year to put together the Singapore Biennale 2006. They travelled across the globe to do the necessary research as well as to pick works to be included in the show.
According to Eugene Tan, the artists were selected based on a theme among other things, "We also wanted to highlight some of the more interesting artists around the world."
This two-month-long Singapore Biennale 2006 features nearly 200 artworks from 118 artists.
