In the days when Singapore was under colonial rule, the Raffles' Town Plan separated the Chinese, Malays, Indians and the colonial masters into ethnic enclaves.

The Chinese immigrant population was settled into an area called Chinatown, grouped into smaller enclaves along different streets according to dialect.

The old sections of Arab Street and Geylang Serai provide a glimpse into the Malay way of life, while the modest but colourful Little India, with its wall-to-wall shops, pungent aromas, and Hindi music, juxtaposes the prim modernity of Singapore.

The Eurasians and the Peranakans traditionally congregate in the area of Katong on the East Coast of Singapore.

Wander in old enclaves of these races and discover the rich ethnic culture and food of Singapore.

This modest but colourful area of wall-to-wall shops, pungent aromas, and Hindi music is a relief from the prim modernity of many parts of the city.

Katong
Katong, a charming village-like area on the East Coast of Singapore, is steeped in Peranakan tradition and culture. The Eurasians are another ethnic group whose roots are in Katong.
