August 9th is a special date on the calendar for Singapore and Singaporeans.

That is when the generally reserved Singaporean becomes unabashedly proud of the little island state they call home. Many chose family and the red and white flag when asked to send in pictures for a collage that says “This is my Singapore”.

This year is Singapore’s 41st year of Nationhood. As in previous years, August 9th itself is when celebrations to mark the nation’s independence are held on a grand scale with the National Day Parade.

The Parade is the highlight of National Day.

This year’s Parade which was held at the National Stadium for the last time before it makes way for re-development, was attended by some 60 thousand people.

Thousands more caught the extravaganza on radio and television broadcasts.

The celebrations however start way before (and after) August 9th in various different ways.
