Frequently Asked Questions
for Facemask
Q1: How many different types of mask are
available?
There are 3 types of masks available in the pharmacies: paper
mask (1 or 2 ply), surgical mask (3 ply) and particulate respirator
(e.g. N-95).
Q2: How is the particulate respirator different
from the paper mask?
The particulate respirator which is often used to protect
against other highly transmissible respiratory infections
such as tuberculosis, is recommended by the WHO (World Health
Organization) and the Communicable Disease Centre in Singapore.
It has the capability of filtering 0.3 um particle that is
lacking in paper mask.
The face to mask seal of the particulate respirators
is superior when compared to paper mask and surgical mask.
Q3: Do these masks offer 100% protection
against SARS?
Particulate respirators are not a guarantee that the user
will not contract SARS. The particulate respirators may help
reduce exposure to airborne biological contaminants, but they
do not eliminate the risk of exposure, infection or illness.
Also, the particulate respirators need to be
worn before and during the entire exposure period for effectiveness;
and the fit of respirator to the face is very important to
ensure that the airborne contaminants will not penetrate the
face-piece seal.
Remember, masks also serve to protect others
from you if you are sick.
Q4: Can I use the same mask every day?
Manufacturers advise disposing and replacing the mask
when it becomes damaged, soiled or when the person finds that
there is some resistance in breathing. Since breathing will
bring about condensation and will cause particles in the air
to eventually clog up the filter system, the mask should be
changed regularly.
Q5: I notice that surgical mask is cheaper,
can I use that in place of the particulate respirator you
mentioned?
Surgical mask can only offer protection to large water
droplets like saliva from coughing and sneezing. The micro-organism
implicated in this recent spate of SARS is identified to have
a very small particle size. Plus the fact that the face to
mask seal is not good enough, the protection offered by surgical
mask will be minimal.
Q6: Can I spray antiseptic onto the mask
to increase its effectiveness?
No. Any measure which has not been advised by the manufacturer
may compromise the usefulness of the mask.
Q7: Can I remove the facemask for a while
before putting it on again?
You should not touch the mask after it has been put on as
the exposed part may contain virus.
Always remember that you should wash your hands
with detergent or antiseptic soap before using and after removing
the mask.
Q8: Is the mask for everyone?
All masks are designed for adults only. Do not use the mask
if you have difficulty in breathing or feel dizzy when using
it.
Particulate respirators are NOT recommended
for people who have asthma, breathing problems and pregnant
women. It is designed for use at health care setting.
