After 10 days of competition in Vientiane, Laos, Singapore ended the SEA Games campaign with 33 gold, 30 silver and 35 bronze medals.

Singapore continued their reign as the swimming kings when the swimmers won a record-breaking 14 gold medals. The team also won eight silvers and 10 bronzes, making it the best-ever away performance by Singapore swimmers. Quah Ting Wen became the top female medalist at the Games with five golds, two silvers and one bronze.

The table tennis team almost managed a clean sweep only to fall short at the men's double when the duo of Gao Ning and Yang Zi failed to overcome their Vietnamese counterpart in the semi-final. The team returned home with six gold, four silver and two bronze medals.

Meanwhile, Singapore's quest for the elusive football gold medal continues as the under-23 football team lost 1-4 to Vietnam in the semi-finals. The team managed to bounce back to defeat host nation Laos 3-1 for the bronze medal.

A total of 195 athletes and 99 officials represented Team Singapore at the 25th SEA Games in Laos from 9 December to 18 December 2009. They participated in 18 of the 25 sports.

Mrs Jessie Phua, Committee Member of the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) and President of the Singapore Bowling, was appointed Chef-de-Mission for the Singapore contingent at the Games.

On 9 November 2009, a SEA Games Flag Presentation Ceremony was held at Nanyang Polytechinc.

Mr Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Defence and President, Singapore National Olympic Council, and Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, officiated at the ceremony.

Mr Teo presented the flags to the contingent’s flag-bearer Ong Jun Hong (Shooting), while Quah Ting Wen (Swimming) led Team Singapore in a pledge-taking ceremony.

“Every athlete who takes part in the Games is competing not just for himself or herself, but for Singapore, and for all those who have helped him or her to get this far,” said Mr Teo.

“Every athlete is competing not just against the other athletes in the field, but also to better his or her previous best performance. So go out there, do your best, for yourself, all those who have supported and helped you, and also for our country, Singapore.”

The highlight of the ceremony was the launch of the Team Singapore Well-Wishing Campaign where Singaporeans can send SMS messages of well wishes to Team Singapore athletes competing in Laos.
