Yaw Shin Leong is an E-Business Analyst with a local IT firm. Concurrently he manages a print brokerage and lectures management studies in private tertiary institutions on a part time basis.
Shin Leong graduated with a Master of Business Administration from the University of Western Sydney and also holds a BA (Merit) degree in Political Science and Sociology from the National University of Singapore.
He was an active student leader and held various leadership appointments. His student activism inducted him into political activism. From May 1999 to April 2000, he helped out with various grassroots activities in the opposition ward of Potong Pasir. From July 2000 to May 2001, he was Partner and Project Director of the civil group, The Think Centre.
Shin Leong joined The Workers’ Party in June 2001 and held several appointments between November 2001 and May 2005, including:
- Legislative Assistant to Low Thia Khiang, MP of Hougang (2001 - 2005)
- Town Councillor of Hougang Town Council (2001 - 2005)
- Secretary of Hougang Constituency Committee (2001 - 2005)
- Secretary of GRC Area Committee (2003 - 2005)
- Deputy Organising Secretary of Central Executive Council (2002 - 2005)
- Chairman of Youth Action Committee (2001 - 2005)
Philosophy
Shin Leong is a staunch believer in National Defence and serves as a company combat medic in his NS battalion.
A Christian, he subscribes to "Speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. To speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."
