TOKYO : An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale jolted the Tokyo area Wednesday morning but there were no immediate reports of damage, officials said.

The quake registered at 4:46 am (1946 GMT) with the epicenter in Ibaraki prefecture about 130 kilometers (80 miles) northeast of Tokyo with a focus 40 kilometers (25 miles) underground, the meteorological agency said.

The impact was powerful enough to shake buildings in central Tokyo, waking many residents up.

But police in Tokyo and Ibaraki said they did not have any immediate reports of damage.

"We have no reports of damage at the moment, although we are still collecting information from police stations in the prefecture," an Ibaraki police spokesman said.

The meteorological agency said there was no danger of tsunami waves. - AFP
