YANGON: Two prominent members of Aung San Suu Kyi's opposition National League for Democracy were arrested by Myanmar security forces at their homes during the night, party officials told AFP.

A party spokesman, Myint Thein, and senior member Hla Pe were arrested when security forces raided their homes, an NLD official in Yangon said.

An NLD spokesman in Bangkok, Zin Linn, confirmed the arrests and said the party was still seeking details from authorities.

Zin Linn said he believed that Myint Thein had been arrested because of his outspoken remarks to foreign media.

"When foreign media called him with questions, he was critical of the regime," Zin Linn said.

At least four other party members have been arrested since Tuesday, according to Amnesty International, which raised fears of torture and other ill treatment in custody.

"Amnesty International believes these and other detainees are at grave risk of torture or other ill-treatment," the London-based rights watchdog said in a statement.

At least 300 people have been arrested just since Wednesday, after Buddhist monks defied a government crackdown and led up to 100,000 people in the streets in anti-junta protests around the city.
