NAUDERO, Pakistan : The party of slain Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto will take part in parliamentary elections on January 8, a party official told AFP on Sunday.

Asked if the Pakistan People's Party would participate in the vote, the official, a member of the party's central executive committee who could not be named, said: "yes."

But it was not immediately clear if the election would go ahead.

Pakistan's election commission was to hold an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss the situation, with at least 38 people killed in unrest since Bhutto's assassination on Thursday.

"All activities pertaining to pre-poll arrangements, including printing of ballot papers and logistics as well as training of polling personnel, have been adversely affected," the commission said on Saturday.

In some places, it said, the security situation was "not conducive" to holding the elections which Bhutto had come home from exile in October to contest. - AFP/de
