SYDNEY: The family of Hollywood actor Heath Ledger Wednesday described his death as an "accidental passing," in a brief statement issued to the media in his home town of Perth.
Parents Kim and Sally stood outside the family home to address the waiting press, along with Ledger's younger sister Kate.
"We, Heath's family can confirm the very tragic, untimely and accidental passing of our dearly loved son, brother and doting father of Matilda," Kim Ledger said, reading from a statement.
"He was found peacefully asleep in his New York apartment by his housekeeper.
"He was a down-to-earth, generous, kind-hearted, life-loving, unselfish individual who was extremely inspirational to many."
He said while the family was grateful for the tributes which have poured in for their son, they wanted to grieve in private.
"We would like to thank our friends and everyone around the world for their well wishes and kind thoughts at this time," Kim Ledger said.
"Heath has touched so many people on so many different levels during his short life but few had the pleasure of truly knowing him.
"Please now respect our family's need to grieve and come to terms with our loss privately."
Reports said Heath Ledger had visited Perth last month for Christmas celebrations with his family.
Ledger was found dead in his Manhattan apartment on Tuesday.
Police sources told US media that prescription pills were found in the apartment and said signs pointed to either an accidental overdose or suicide. - AFP/ac
