MUMBAI: Commandos rescued 39 people trapped inside Mumbai's Oberoi/Trident hotel and "mopping up operations" following an Islamic militant attack in the building are continuing, police said early Friday.

"Around 39 people have been brought out, some of them are foreigners," an aide to Mumbai police commissioner A N Roy said, adding the people had been in hiding in their hotel rooms since the militant attacks began.

"Our forces are engaged in mopping up operations and looking for other people who might be still in there. We are checking room by room," said the official.

"We cannot yet say whether the hotel is... 100 percent clear of terrorists."

The Oberoi/Trident was one of two luxury hotels targeted in the Mumbai attacks, which began late Wednesday.

Officials said the Taj Mahal hotel has been almost entirely cleared by commandos, with just one injured militant holed up in that building. - AFP/de
