TOKYO : A Korean Air jet carrying 387 people scraped its tail on landing at Tokyo's Narita airport in high winds on Monday, causing the closure of the main runway for more than an hour, airport officials said.

No one was injured in the incident involving the Boeing 777-300, which arrived from Incheon International Airport, but the main runway at Narita was shut for 78 minutes for checks, the transport ministry said.

There were winds of up to 60 kilometres (40 miles) per hour at the time, according to Narita's weather observatory.

"The winds were presumed to have hit the aircraft's side," an observatory official said.

A young woman who had been seated in the plane's middle section told public broadcaster NHK: "I felt a bang and bounced on landing. Then I heard people screaming in the cabin."

The plane moved to a parking apron on its own power, the transport ministry said, and civil aviation officials were investigating the cause and damage to the plane.

In March, a cargo plane crashed while attempting to land in high winds and exploded into a ball of flames at Narita airport, killing both pilots. - AFP/ms
