TAIPEI: A strong 6.3-magnitude earthquake rocked Taiwan early Sunday, the central weather bureau said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The quake hit at 1:36 am (1736 GMT Saturday) about 23 kilometres off the east coast of Taiwan at a depth of 15 kilometres and was felt in the capital Taipei, the bureau said.

Taiwan is regularly hit by earthquakes as the island lies near the junction of two tectonic plates.
