TAIPEI: Taiwan confirmed on Thursday that it will hold much-anticipated high-level talks with China from December 21 to 23 in the city of Taichung in the centre of the island.

The talks between China's top envoy Chen Yunlin and Taiwan’s Chiang Pin-kung will be the fourth since relations between the two sides began to thaw in mid-2008.

The announcement was made at the end of the last preparatory meeting held in the southeast Chinese city of Fuzhou, according to a statement released by Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation.

The agenda for the visit by Chen Yunlin, who heads China's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait, "was fixed during the meeting", the foundation said.

"The visit will be arranged under the principles of safety, convenience and dignity," it said.

Negotiations will focus on four topics - avoidance of double taxation, inspection of farming produce, fisheries cooperation and industry standards certification.
