DENPASAR: A man who flew in from Australia with marijuana allegedly hidden in some rolled-up socks has been arrested on the holiday island of Bali, Indonesian police said on Tuesday.
The man, identified as Robert Paul McJannett, 48, was arrested on Monday night after disembarking from a Virgin Blue flight from Perth, provincial police spokesman Gede Sugianyar told AFP.
"His hand luggage was checked by customs officials at the airport and they found 1.7 grams (0.06 ounces) of marijuana in it," he added.
McJannett, who arrived on the island with his 21-year-old son, concealed the marijuana in rolled-up socks, provincial police anti-narcotics head Kokot Indarto said.
"He put the marijuana in his socks, rolled them up and then wrapped it with aluminium foil," he added.
If found guilty, he faces up to 12 years in jail for possessing marijuana and carrying drugs from abroad, Indarto added.
"We are still investigating the case, including whether or not he is an Australian citizen," Indarto said.
Indonesia enforces stiff penalties, including life imprisonment and death, for drug trafficking.
