JAKARTA: Indonesian police on Tuesday formally accused the father-in-law of slain terror mastermind Noordin Mohammed Top of harbouring the Malaysian extremist and storing explosives, laying the ground for charges.
"Baridin has been made a suspect for hiding Noordin M. Top and storing materials used to make a homemade bomb," national police chief detective Ito Sumardi told AFP.
"We're still exploring his network," he added.
Under Indonesian law the naming of a person as a suspect prepares the way for a court to lay formal charges.
Baharudin Latif, alias Baridin, faces more than six years in jail if found guilty of the offences, Sumardi said.
He was arrested last Thursday in the West Java district of South Garut after months on the run.
In July he escaped a police raid on his home in Cilacap, Central Java, where bomb-making materials were found buried in the building's yard.
According to the International Crisis Group think tank, Noordin married the suspect's daughter Arina Rahmah in 2006 and the couple had two children.
Noordin, who was killed in a bloody raid by police in September in Central Java, is believed to have masterminded the July suicide bombings of Jakarta's JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels. Seven people were killed.
The 41-year old Malaysian was also blamed for a 2003 attack on the Marriott that killed 12 people, as well as the 2004 bombing of the Australian embassy in Jakarta and attacks on tourist restaurants on Bali in 2005. - AFP/de
