SEOUL: Five people were killed when Typhoon Kompasu battered South Korea with strong winds and heavy rain, the disaster relief centre said Friday.
The storm, which swept through the peninsula Thursday, also paralysed some subway lines, cut power to tens of thousands of homes and forced airlines to cancel or divert domestic and international flights.
The National Emergency Management Agency, giving an updated death toll, said four people in Gyeonggi and South Chungcheong provinces -- which took a direct hit -- were killed by flying tiles, signboards or tree branches.
Another person was electrocuted while trying to restore the supply in the southwestern town of Mokpo.
The storm was the strongest to hit the Seoul metropolitan area for 15 years. The disaster agency said 29,000 government officials, soldiers and volunteers were working on a clean-up.
