TOKYO: North Korea fired several short-range missiles Friday in the direction of the Sea of Japan (East Sea), according to Japanese news reports.
The Kyodo News agency, quoting unnamed sources, said the communist nation fired "several short-range missiles" on Friday morning.
Public broadcaster NHK said Japan was not at risk.
The defence ministries of Japan of South Korea were unable immediately to confirm the reports.
North Korea triggered international outrage in July last year by testing a series of missiles and an atomic bomb.
On July 5 it test-fired six short and mid-range missiles and one long-range missile, the Taepodong-2. All fell harmlessly in the Sea of Japan.
In October the hardline regime tested a nuclear weapon for the first time, sparking global condemnation and UN sanctions.
After months of talks, Pyongyang signed a breakthrough deal in February to shut down its nuclear reactor in exchange for badly needed fuel aid.
But the disarmament process has been deadlocked since then and North Korea failed to meet the first key deadline in April due to a dispute over frozen assets at a Macau bank.
