ASADABAD, Afghanistan: A German reporter kidnapped early Wednesday in eastern Afghanistan has been freed along with his Afghan translator, a provincial governor said.

"They were both freed with the mediation of tribal elders and other influential people. They are safe and sound," Shalizai Didar, the governor of eastern Kunar province, told AFP.

The Taliban had earlier claimed responsibility for kidnapping the German journalist, who was the third German national to be abducted in Afghanistan in a week. - AFP/yy
