DENPASAR, Indonesia : A 50-year-old Australian man has been arrested on a drugs charge on Indonesia's resort island of Bali for which he could face up to 10 years in prison, police said Thursday.

The Australian, identified only by the initials BWH, was arrested on Sunday in the main beach resort area of Kuta allegedly in possession of 2.7 grammes of marijuana and 14.4 grammes of hashish, police said.

"During interrogation, he admitted that those things were his," police spokeswoman Sri Harmiti told reporters.

A series of Australians have been arrested on the resort island in recent years.

Six Australians are awaiting the firing squad in Bali's Kerobokan prison for their roles in the so-called "Bali Nine" gang convicted of trying to smuggle heroin out of the island.

The remaining three members of the group are serving sentences ranging from 20 years to life.

Australian Schapelle Corby is currently serving a 20-year sentence for bringing marijuana into the country.

Indonesia has been handing down stiff penalties for drug traffickers and users, with at least 35 other convicts on death row for narcotics offences.
