BANGKOK: At least 87 people including foreigners were killed Sunday when a Thai airliner crashed on the southern resort island of Phuket, the director of the airport there told AFP. "There are absolutely foreigners among the dead because almost 70 per cent of passengers in this flight were foreigners," Pornchai Eua-aree said.
Hospitals in Phuket have confirmed foreigners were on the plane and among the injured.
"We still don't know the cause of the accident." Pornchai Eua-aree told AFP that officials expected the death toll to rise.
"We expect more bodies inside the wreckage since a large number of passengers are missing," he said. Aviation officials have said that the MD-82, operated by low-cost carrier One-Two-Go, burst into flames and broke in two when it slid off the runway upon landing, crashing into trees. - AFP/ac
