BANGKOK : Forensic police have identified 21 of the foreign victims who were killed when a passenger jet crashed in southern Thailand, a senior police officer said Tuesday.
Major General Santhan Chayanon, police chief overseeing the Phuket air crash site, said that of the 89 passengers and crew killed Sunday when a MD-82 plane slid off the runway on the island resort of Phuket, 57 were foreigners.
"Of the foreigners, 21 have been identified and autopsies have been carried out on the other 36, and we are waiting for relatives to help identify them," Santhan told AFP.
He could not give a breakdown of the nationalities of the 21 identified.
Foreign embassies in Bangkok have been scrambling to gather information about their citizens who were on the One-Two-Go jet that slammed onto the runway when attempting to land in bad weather.
So far, the US embassy in Bangkok confirmed that four American tourists were killed and one survived, while Australia has said one of its citizens, a man, died in the crash and one man was injured.
The British embassy has said "several" Britons were among the dead and at least two were injured, but a spokeswoman was unable to give exact numbers.
Three French nationals were killed and one injured, the foreign ministry announced in Paris, while six remain missing.
Officials in Germany have confirmed that at least one national - a 29-year-old man - died and four were injured, while the Swedish foreign ministry said one Swede was killed, two survived and one was missing.
The foreign ministry in Dublin has confirmed that one Irish national was killed.
The 56-year-old Indonesian pilot was also among the dead. - AFP/ch
