JAKARTA : An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 struck off the west coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island on Wednesday, but there were no immediate reports of damage, seismologists said.

The epicentre of the quake, which struck at 10:43 pm (1543 GMT), was located about 130 kilometres southwest of the city of Padang, at a depth of 35 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.

A 8.4-magnitude quake hit western Sumatra earlier this month, killing 23 people.

It was followed by a series of major aftershocks which experts have said could rattle the region into this week.

Indonesia sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where continental plates meet - and where earthquakes are a regular and often deadly occurrence. - AFP/de
