JAKARTA: A moderate 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's Sulawesi island on Wednesday, the US Geological Survey said.

The tremor, which struck at 11:53 pm (1453 GMT), hit 178 kilometres south of the capital Manado and was 55 kilometres deep, the USGS said.

There were no immediate reports of damage and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre had not issued a tsunami warning.

Indonesia was the nation worst hit by the quake-triggered Asian tsunami in December 2004 that killed 168,000 people in the country's Aceh province.

The Indonesian archipelago sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where continental plates meet and cause frequent seismic and volcanic activity. - AFP/de
