Four killed, hundreds injured in Mongolian unrest

ULAN BATOR, Mongolia: Four people were killed and about 400 policemen injured during riots that swept through the Mongolian capital amid anger over disputed elections, national television reported on Wednesday.

Two of the four people were shot to death in the unrest that broke out on Tuesday, Mongolian National Broadcasting (MNB) reported, citing a doctor at the hospital where the pair died.

Further information on the four deaths was not immediately available.

MNB also reported that 400 policemen had been injured. AFP was not immediately able to contact police for confirmation.

MNB, a state-run channel, is the only television service allowed to operate under a state of emergency that was declared by Mongolian President Nambariin Enkhbayar late on Tuesday in response to the violence.

About 6,000 people rampaged through Ulan Bator on Tuesday to protest what they claimed was the alleged rigging of weekend elections by the former communist Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party.

The MPRP has claimed victory in the polls, but its main rival, the Democratic Party, has alleged widespread vote-rigging.

Mongolian President Nambariin Enkhbayar on Tuesday declared a four-day state of emergency amid the violent protests, according to national television.
