TOKYO: Police arrested a boy on Wednesday for hijacking a bus with a knife on a major highway in central Japan, a police spokesman said.

No one was hurt in the incident, which was resolved within an hour of police receiving the first emergency call.

The boy admitted that he hijacked the bus in Okazaki, a city 250 kilometres (155 miles) southwest of Tokyo, with some 10 passengers onboard, the police spokesman said.

He was taken away by police after trying to confine himself on the bus, which was travelling on the Tomei Expressway that connects Tokyo with the central city of Nagoya.

The suspect said he was 14 years old, Jiji Press news agency and public broadcaster NHK reported. His motive was not immediately clear.
