TAIPEI : Taiwan's defence ministry grounded the army fleet of advanced US-made attack helicopters after one crash landed Wednesday into a home in the island's north, killing two pilots.

The army's AH-1Ws were to be grounded for a safety check and until the cause of the accident was identified, the ministry said in a statement.

An AH-1W Super Cobra attack helicopter was on a routine training mission when it plunged into a home in Taoyuan county at 10:15 am (0215 GMT), the ministry said.

The pilots, identified as Lieutenant Colonel Yu Chien-wen and army Captain Lee Huang-yu, were pronounced dead hours after they were rushed to a nearby army hospital, the ministry said.

The roof of the four-storey home was slightly damaged and two parked cars were destroyed. No one else was injured in the incident.

The ministry has organised a group to investigate the second crash of an AH-1W in nine years.
