SHANGHAI : Prosecutors said Thursday they had charged a 28-year-old man with murder over an attack on a Shanghai police station that left six officers dead.
In a statement announcing the charge, the Shanghai Municipal People's Procuratorate said the facts against Yang Jia were clear, the crime was premeditated and that he was guilty.
Lawyers seeking to represent Yang in court said he would likely be sentenced to death but that it was "worth a try" arguing he was suffering from a temporary mental disorder, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
Lawyer Xiong Liesuo was quoted as saying he had applied to meet Yang and would propose that he be tried "in an open court session, to ensure fairness of the investigation and trial".
Prosecutors said Yang confessed to attacking a district police headquarters in the north of the city on July 1 because he wanted revenge after he was detained in October on suspicion of stealing a bicycle.
He was upset after public security officials rejected his claim for 10,000 yuan (1,464 US dollars) in compensation for psychological damage after his detention, prosecutors said.
Yang lit several Molotov cocktails at the front gate before stabbing a security guard, according to state media.
He attacked a total of 10 people as he rampaged his way through the building, prosecutors said. He climbed to the 21st floor before being overpowered and arrested, state media said.
Six officers were killed in the attack. The other three officers and the security guard who were injured remain in hospital but are in stable conditions, Xinhua quoted police as saying.
