MADRID: Japan's Crown Prince Naruhito visited Madrid's prestigious Prado Museum on Thursday and also received the keys to the city on the first full day of a week-long visit to Spain.

Naruhito, who arrived on Wednesday, met with Madrid Mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon at the city hall after visiting the Prado, which houses works from some of Spain's most important artists such as Velazquez and Goya.

Later Thursday, he is to attend a dinner hosted by King Juan Carlos.

On Friday, he meets with Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and later with Crown Prince Felipe.

He is to leave Madrid for the northern city of Zaragoza on Sunday to visit Expo 2008, an international exposition on water and sustainable development, an issue of longstanding interest for the heir to the Chrysanthemum Throne.

His wife, Crown Princess Masako, is not accompanying him on the trip, which ends July 22.

The princess, a 44-year-old former diplomat educated at Harvard and Oxford, has been suffering stress-induced illness for years and has skipped official trips overseas.
