BEIJING: At least 24 people died when a bus overturned in northwest China's northwest Xinjiang region, state media said Wednesday.

The accident happened mid-afternoon Tuesday on a remote mountain road leading to Artux city, the Xinhua news agency reported.

Many of the passengers were high school students from Han Chinese families as well as families of teh Kirgiz ethnic minority, with 24 people confirmed dead, the agency said.

An official at Xinjiang's Work Safety Administration told AFP he was not aware of the details, but said the incident did not seem to be the result of a terrorist act.

More than 30 people have died in Xinjiang this month as a result of recent attacks apparently timed to coincide with the Beijing Olympics and blamed by China on Muslim terrorists from the region.
