BEIJING: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived in Beijing Saturday for a one-day visit, an Iranian embassy spokesman said, hours before the Paralympic Games were due to begin.

Ahmadinejad will hold talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao later Saturday, and meet Iranian athletes before attending the opening ceremony of the Games, embassy spokesman Mahmoud Rezvani told AFP.

He had originally planned to stay in China's capital for two days, and was to hold a press conference, but his stay was cut short to one day and the media event cancelled.

The embassy could give no reason for why the trip was cut short.

China is a close ally of Iran, whose vast oil and gas resources feed into China's growing energy demand. China is also one of the biggest exporters to Iran.
