HONG KONG : Hong Kong authorities said Thursday they had found the industrial chemical melamine in drinks, ice-creams and yoghurt made by a Chinese firm involved in a widening food safety scandal.
The chemical, used to make plastics, was found in eight out of 30 products tested from mainland China company Yili Group, said Constance Chan, head of the Hong Kong's Centre for Food Safety.
She said Yili should recall its products, but stopped short of issuing a ban on their sales.
"We have demanded the importer to stop selling the tainted products and that it has to issue a recall on all its dairy products on sale in Hong Kong," Chan said.
The products included milk, yoghurt and ice-cream.
"We urge the public to stop drinking products from the brand," Chan told a news conference.
Chan said the centre was speeding up their analysis of other dairy brands, with more test results expected over the next few days, she said.
Hong Kong's two supermarket chains Park'n Shop and Wellcome told AFP they had removed all Yili products from their shelves and would offer a refund to customers who had purchased any of the goods.
Yili's Hong Kong agent said Thursday afternoon that they had recalled all their ice bars and ice-cream on sale in the city to ease public worries, local broadcaster RTHK reported. - AFP/ms
