BEIJING: China said on Wednesday that a check of major liquid dairy products made since September 14 had shown no traces of the toxic chemical melamine.
The inspection of samples of 235 different products - including milk and yoghurt - covered well-known brands such as Mengniu, Yili and Sanyuan, the product quality watchdog said in a statement posted on its website.
"The result was that none of the samples contained melamine," the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in the statement.
The check did not cover milk powder, which has been at the centre of this month's food safety scare after 53,000 children were sickened and four died.
Melamine is added to milk to make it appear richer in protein. However, it is considered a serious health risk and the reason why thousands of Chinese babies developed kidney stones.
China has been struggling to contain the negative impact on the reputation of its products since the milk scandal emerged early this month.
More than a dozen countries have ordered bans on Chinese milk products or taken other steps to curb consumption. - AFP/de
