Earthquake hits Indonesia's Sumatra region

JAKARTA: A moderate 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the Mentawai region off the west coast of Indonesia's Sumatra province on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said.

No tsunami warning was immediately issued and there were no reports of damage.

The quake struck at 4:18 am (2118 GMT Monday), with the epicentre measured at 167 kilometres from Bengkulu on the island of Sumatra.

It was recorded at a depth of 54 kilometres.
