SYDNEY - A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck Papua New Guinea Sunday, the US Geological Survey said.
The epicentre of the moderate quake, which hit at 5:56 am (1956 GMT Saturday), was located 60 kilometres (38 miles) southeast of Kandrian, New Britain, at a depth of 49 km, the USGS said.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii did not immediately issue any type of alert following the earthquake.
Papua New Guinea is home to many active volcanoes and sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where several tectonic plates collide. The region is frequently rocked by earthquakes.
