BEIJING: Eleven people were killed in parts of eastern and southwestern China in some of the heaviest rain so far this year, state media reported Thursday.
Nine people were killed and one remained missing after torrential rains started early this week in southwest Guizhou province, the Xinhua news agency said.
In eastern Jiangxi province, two people were killed when their house collapsed due to the downpours, the agency said.
The heavy rains were forecast to last until Friday, with local officials on alert for possible floods and landslides, according to Xinhua.
The report comes just days after officials warned in local state media that China would face more instances of extreme weather in the future due in part to global warming.
