JAKARTA : A suspected suicide bomber disguised himself as a guest of the JW Marriott hotel in Jakarta before detonating his device, killing at least seven people, senior police said on Friday.

"The perpetrator disguised himself as a guest at the JW Marriott," Jakarta police chief Wahyono told reporters, referring to one of two attacks at luxury hotels in downtown Jakarta which killed nine people and wounded at least 40.

Police said the bombs used in the attacks were homemade and they suspected the one used in the car park basement of the Marriott was triggered by a suicide bomber.

"This should be a suicide bomber because there is a victim with his head cut off," a senior source in the counter-terrorism unit told AFP, requesting anonymity.

National police spokesman Nanan Soekarna said bombmaking materials and an unexploded bomb had been found in room 1808 at the Marriott but it was not clear if the alleged bomber had been staying there.

"In room 1808 of the JW Marriott, we found explosive materials and an active bomb. The guest of the room brought a laptop with him," he told reporters.

"We still don't know who booked room 1808... We are still investigating."

A senior aide to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said earlier the room was a "control centre" for the attacks. - AFP/ms
