WASHINGTON: Japanese automaker Honda recalled new Pilot and Acura MDX sports utility vehicles in the United States Thursday because of a potential fuel tank leak.

The recall affects about 8,700 model-year 2012 of the SUVs. Honda said it would inspect and, if necessary, replace the fuel tank.

A materials flaw in a valve case could result in the case detaching from its mounting, potentially allowing fuel to overflow or leak from the fuel tank, "increasing the risk of fire," Honda said in a statement.

To date no fires or injuries have been reported related to the problem, the company said.

It was the second Honda recall in as many days.

On Wednesday Honda recalled 51,633 model-year 2008-2009 Odyssey minivans worldwide to fix a problem with the power tailgate that could make it close unexpectedly, increasing the risk of personal injury.

The bulk of the vehicles affected, 45,747, are in the United States.
