TOKYO : Toyota Motor Corp. president Fujio Cho said the world's second-largest automaker aims to sell one million hybrid vehicles a year.
"In the future we would like to sell one million hybrid vehicles a year," Cho said Tuesday, without giving a timeframe.
He was speaking at the launch in Tokyo of two new hybrid models of its Harrier and Kluger sport utility vehicles.
Cho said Toyota hoped to sell 300,000 hybrid vehicles globally either this year or next.
It was not clear what 12-month period he was referring to -- calendar or the April to March financial year.
Toyota released the Prius sedan, its first hybrid car, which runs on a gasoline engine and an electric motor, in December 1997. The Prius now sells about 5,000 units per month in the domestic market alone.
Its next-generation, more powerful hybrid system was first introduced in the Prius in September 2003 and will power the Harrier and Kluger.
Toyota said its hoped to sell 500 Harriers and Klugers each per month in the domestic market after launching them in April.
Globally it aims to sell ultimately about 50,000 per month of the two models, Cho told reporters.
"The two models are to be put into markets in North America, Europe and Oceania between April and June," said Cho.
The two models will be manufactured at Toyota's Kyushu plants in southern Japan.
