BANGALORE, India : United Breweries Group, a leading Indian conglomerate and its biggest brewery, is bidding to acquire French champagne group Taittinger, a UB Group spokesman has announced.

"Yes, we are in the race," a UB spokesman, who did not wish to be named, told AFP in southern Bangalore city, where the company is headquartered.

The official declined to give details about how much the company -- one of six bidders -- has offered for Taittinger, which US group Starwood Capital acquired in July.

Media reports have put the bid figure at around 600 million euro.

Taittinger was not expected to announce the winning bid for two or three weeks.

The UB Group describes itself as the world's third-largest spirits marketer and is owned by flamboyant industrialist Vijay Mallya. The group controls more than half the Indian spirit and beer industry and also has interests in construction and aviation.
