WASHINGTON : Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi warned on Tuesday against the danger of injecting politics into US economic and trade relations, saying problems should be handled "according to economic law."

Madam Wu Yi, leading a Chinese delegation at two-day bilateral talks in Washington, said that US-China trade relations should be viewed as part of a long-term strategic relationship.

"Attempts to politicise economic and trade issues should be resisted," said Madam Wu Yi in opening remarks. "Problems and controversies should be handled calmly and addressed according to economic law."

"Politicising economic and trade issues is unacceptable," she added.

She said that the United States, the world's most developed nation, and China were at different stages of development.

"We should not easily blame the other side for our domestic problems," she said.

A key issue the United States plans to pursue at the "strategic economic dialogue" meeting is China's yuan currency.

US lawmakers have accused Beijing of keeping its currency artificially low to give its exporters an unfair advantage, a key factor cited for the snowballing US trade deficit with China that hit a whopping 232 billion dollars last year.

A group of 21 lawmakers from the US Senate's powerful finance committee wrote to Madam Wu Yi last week, asking her to be prepared to make "meaningful commitments" at the meeting. - AFP/ir/de
